Stainless Steel Backsplash Tiles

A tile backsplash although not very large in size, is an area which if used properly can have a huge impact on a room.   While a backsplash does need to function as a protective barrier between your wall and the liquids, heat, and moisture typically found in the kitchen or bathroom, because of its small size and large impact, it is also one of the easiest and most popular places to add an upgrade to your home.  Installing a stainless steel backsplash is not only extremely easy but it can do things many other tile materials just can’t.

Why Stainless Steel?

There are many reasons to choose stainless steel tiles over other tile materials.  The most popular reason is just how elegant, sleek and modern they look.  Nothing says elegance like sleek and smooth stainless steel.   It is these qualities that are the hallmarks of this metal tile which not only reflects light but creates a modern space wherever it is installed.

You Get Triple The Value

Another reason many homeowners choose a stainless steel  tiles backsplash is that it echoes or matches their existing stainless steel appliances.  Whether it’s your stainless steel sink, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, or all of these, a stainless steel backsplash will work perfectly in conjunction with them to form a cohesive, clean, and modern look throughout the entire room.  This is great for the homeowner because by installing backsplash tiles in one area you will be receiving triple the benefit: 1. the effect of the appliances accentuating your backsplash 2. Your backsplash accentuating your appliances and 3. the combined effect of both working together to create a well balanced and blended room which looks sleek, elegant, modern, and clean.

No Grout!

Intensifying this smooth and clean metallic look is the fact that stainless steel kitchen backsplash tiles don’t use grout.  Unlike other types of tiles, these are typically set flush up against each other to make them look like one unified space.  This means that not only do you not have to deal with messy grout during installation, but no grout lines to maintain or clean on a regular basis.  This is also good because grout lines take away from the metallic effect of the stainless steel by distracting your eyes.   However if you do like the look of grout you can use it, although make sure to use unsanded grout.

Extremely Easy To Install

The fact that stainless steel tiles don’t use grout makes a stainless steel backsplash extremely easy to install. In fact it’s an easy job for the DIY homeowner.  They can be installed over any flat surface; however this surface must be clean so that the adhesive can bond properly.  Usually stainless steel tiles come with either a cork, cement board, or hard board backing that is around ¼” thick. To install them all you need is a few drops of a construction adhesive such as “liquid nails,” and they will quickly bond to the wall.    Many stainless steel tiles actually have a peel and stick backing, making them even easier to install.

Easy To Clean And Extremely Hygienic

One of the best features of a stainless steel backsplash is how easy it is to clean and maintain.  No harsh tile cleaner is needed for these types of tiles, any generic glass cleaner will do.  Simply spray it on a soft towel and rub in a circular motion until it’s dry.  Plain warm water or warm water mixed with dish soap also works well.

However if you do use water to clean your tiles make sure you dry them completely as the minerals in the water can cause water spots if it is not dried properly.    There are also many stainless steel cleaners which are manufactured to give your backsplash a polished look and protect it from scratches. To make cleaning even easier is the fact that stainless steel is naturally resistant to bacteria, corrosion, and rust. This natural resistance makes a stainless steel backsplash an extremely hygienic surface for your kitchen, where bacteria has no place. It is this resistance to bacteria as well as its easiness to clean that makes stainless steel the preferred choice in commercial settings like the kitchens of restaurants and hotels.

Many Options

Making a stainless steel backsplash even more appealing is the many styles and options in which stainless steel tiles are available.  Typically stainless steel tiles have a shiny, smooth, mirror like finish.  However if you prefer a matte finish you can purchase brushed stainless steel tiles which have a dull brushed look. Because of their dull finish brushed stainless steel tiles are more resistant to fingerprints and smudging than the normal tiles with a shinier finish.

Many people like the look of both, and choose to install a backsplash with both brushed as well as normal stainless steel tiles in an alternating pattern.  As for shape, they are available in both square tiles and rectangular subway tiles.  In fact stainless steel subway tiles in the running bond tile pattern, with a brushed finish is one of the most popular and best looking options. There are even tiles available with embossed or raised patterns on them. These embossed designs can range from simple shapes such as diamonds or triangles to more intricate patterns such as the Versailles tile pattern.

To make things even easier some stainless steel subway tiles are sometimes sold by the sheet as opposed to individually

With so many different options available, and so many advantages, stainless steel is definitely a great choice for the homeowner looking for a modern, elegant, and clean look.  And there is no better place to install them than your backsplash.  Easy to clean, install, great looking and providing an even greater value, using stainless steel tiles for backsplash projects whether in the kitchen or bathroom is always a smart and attractive way to go.
